Hello Parents!
How to Have a Calm Home - Things that worked for me:)
1) Communication. When I was a preschool director, there was a mom with an awesome 4 year old daughter, and I asked her if she had any parenting recommendations. She said that she talked to her daughter all of the time about everything. All day, every day, she spoke to her daughter like she was a person and pointed things out along the way. I made a conscious effort to do that with my own daughter, and let's just say, she is advanced in talking and communicating. People who meet and engage with her always comment how well she communicates.
2) Limit the Devices. I know, I know, easier said than done. Devices were new when my daughter was a child. We learned very quickly to draw a line because my daughter demanded them as soon as she woke up. My husband and I explained to her how we were going to start our day, greeting each other with a smile and a cuddle, and then going on talking and listening to music. She was allowed to watch very PBS shows in the morning. We saved the DVDs and eventually streaming videos for when we were traveling for more than an hour. This benefitted us while traveling because she was excited to see what movies and shows she hadn't seen before.
3) Only Radio, Music, or AudioBooks when driving in car. Yes! This is possible. My child would only be allowed to watch a video in the car when and when we were driving for more than an hour. She got it and actually likes listening to there radio until this day. It would be a problem when we drove other children in our car and they were used to always watching something or playing a video game. We'd make sure we'd engage in direct conversation and put on fun sing-a-long music.
4) Turn it into a song. Along with talking, we'd sing. Sing all of the time. Children LOVE it when their parents sing to and with them. I would even turn things I wanted her to learn into a memorable jingle: phone number, full name, address...
5) If YOU are calm, your children will be calm. Begin YOUR Hedgy's Guide to Calm 21 Day Challenge and practice using YOUR Super Powers to Becoming a Super-Calm YOU in front and with your children. They WILL absorb what you are doing. They will join in. They will feel the benefits of having a calm nervous system along with you. They will LOVE living in a calm home.
6) Share Hedgy's Guide to Calm self regulation program with YOUR WHOLE family! Read. Sing. Move. Role Play. Journal. Share. Color.
