Leanne Burgess, an experienced teacher and mom.
My name is Leanne, but some call me Ms. Leanne, or Mrs.B. Let me tell you a little about myself and where I got the idea for Hedgy’s Guide to Calm.
I am a teacher and mom. I have been teaching for more than twenty years and over the years fell into the role of the Happy Music Teacher. This was perfect for me because everyone loves music - fellow teachers, administrators, parents, and students. I started my own music and movement business and taught at several schools ages 3 months to 12 year olds. I even taught a class to my daughter’s playgroup beginning when they were babies.
I learned very early on in my teaching career, that the only way to have a successful lesson was to have good classroom management. Everyone loves music and it can be very stimulating. I taught hundreds of students of all different ages and developmental levels in a week, up to 5 class a day. In order to focus, ground, and calm my students at the beginning of each class, I would take 3-5 minutes to do a calming activity that usually involved a song.
in my personal life, I was dealing with trauma and began having consistent night terrors. I began therapy, reading books, and participating in calming activities in order to help self regulate. My inner teacher, turned what I was practicing into a song.
I shared my little calming jingle and ideas with my good friend, fellow teacher, and mom, Liza, who is also a talented artist and she came up with Hedgy. She thought a cute and lovable hedgehog, name Hedgy, would be the perfect face to guide people to calm and Hedgy’s Guide to Calm was born! This was right up my alley because I always taught with puppets, especially when teaching younger children.
I wrote Hedgy’s Guide to Calm and Liza sketched out the illustrations. During Covid, as I was home with time on my hands, I began finalizing Hedgy’s Guide to Calm by using Liza’s sketches to finish illustrating the PDF book, recording Hedgy Calm Action Song (with my family), writing and illustrating an activity and coloring PDF books, creating videos, developing a website - check it out supercalmhedgy.com, posting of social media as supercalmhedgy on TikTok, FaceBook, Instagram, and YouTube, and even designing merchandise, I call, Hedgy’s Mirror Messages (mHm).
All of this leads me to today and the Hedgy’s Guide to Calm 21 Day Challenge.
