"The inner voice is a basic feature of the human mind." - Ethan Kross
I heard Ethan Kross on the podcast NPR's Hidden Brain podcast with Shankar Vedantam. The episode, 'Befriending Your Inner Voice' grabbed my attention because Ethan Kross explained that his research showed that using "distanced self talk" could be beneficial during traumatic circumstances.
In Hedgy's Guide to Calm, I suggested using the inner voice (first person) when using Super Power 5 - BREATHING to slow down breathing with the calming affirmation, "I am calm. I am calm." After listening to Ethan Kross, I want to add a "distanced self talk" calming affirmation, "You are calm. You are calm.' OR "YOUR NAME HERE is calm. YOUR NAME HERE is calm." I ordered the book and recommend it to all teachers and parents.
The tools for how to "befriend your inner voice" will benefit all of us, including children.
"Talking to yourself using your name promotes intellectual humility and helps people recognize that the world is constantly changing – key facets of wise reasoning." - Ethan Kross
