Part Three to successfully adding Hedgy's Guide to Calm self regulation program to your classroom's daily rhythm and routine is adding the BONUS Super Power Visualize.
Please watch my 'How to Teach Super Power 6) Visualize **BONUS Super Power**' video for further details. Before teaching the individual Super Powers, I would highly recommend you introduce Hedgy (your lovable and trustworthy guide) and Hedgy's Calm Action Song with VISUALIZE.
It's time to go to www.supercalmhedgy.com and purchase the MP3 Hedgy Calm Action Song with VISUALIZE. and put up Hedgy's Calm Action Card for VISUALIZE. on the wall with the rest of the cards. Sing and move with Hedgy's Calm Action Song with VISUALIZE all day long and then slowly introduce the BONUS Super Power 6) VISUALIZE.
Hedgy (and I) will guide you through how to teach the BONUS Super Power 6) VISUALIZE. VISUALIZE. is a Super Power that can be used on its own but is even more powerful when used with the other 5 Super Powers.
Here are some suggestions about how to introduce VISUALIZE.:
* Read the VISUALIZE pages in Hedgy's Guide to Calm to your students
* Use Super Power STOP. and have them close their eyes and picture their favorite person.
* After a couple of minutes, have them open their eyes and describe to them who YOU visualized.
* Ask them to share who they visualized with the class, a friend, and/or written or drawn in a journal.
* This can be done at morning meeting, during Language Arts, before and/or after transitions or breaks, at the end of the day, and as an at home activity. REPEAT for favorite place and activity (SPREAD OUT OVER A COUPLE OF DAYS OR WEEKS.)
Journaling: VISUALIZE. is an excellent Super Power for journaling. Your students can visualize a different person, place, or activity every time they use Super Power VISUALIZE. Journaling using words and drawings is a great way for students to list people, places, and activities that make them feel good and putting them all in a journal will become a great resource for them to refer to when they need a reminder. Keeping a Super Power VISUALIZE journal for the entire school year will be a wonderful keepsake and can be added to each student's self regulation tool box. It is important for you students to also see you write and drawn in YOUR OWN Super Power VISUALIZE. Using VISUALIZE. with other 5 Super Powers: When the 6 Super Powers to Becoming a Super-Calm YOU are learned and practice over an extending period of time, using them all together come naturally.
STOP. LOOK. LISTEN. WIGGLE. BREATHE. & VISUALIZE. With practice, it will only take just over a minute (at a time) to use the 6 Super Powers feeling stressed, sad, upset, or excited and need to calm down. The Super Powers can be used from One to One Million times during a day. Eventually, the Super Powers will automatically kick in when your body is (triggered) stressed, sad, upset, or excited and needs to calm down. TAKE - YOUR - TIME
The Super Powers to Becoming a Super-Calm YOU are a WHOLE life skills and it is beneficial for them to be learned over an extended period of time for a better understanding and to allow "new behaviors to become automatic and enacted with minimum conscious awareness because the repetitive behavioral patterns are literally etched into our neural pathways.” - Psychology Today
